White-label or your own app

Signs you've outgrown your white-label app.

A white-label app is the branded app your booking platform gives you, with your logo and colors on the same app every other club gets. It's a good place to start. You've outgrown it when members live around the app instead of in it, when what you need isn't on the vendor's roadmap, or when every location feels like a different business.

The signs

Seven signs it's time for your own app.

  1. 01

It looks like every other club's app.

Same layout, same flows, a different logo. Members can't tell your app apart from the one down the street, and the experience doesn't match what they pay for their membership.

  2. 02

Members live in WhatsApp, not in your app.

Announcements go out on WhatsApp, events on Instagram, perks by email. The app is only opened to book, so it never becomes the place where your community happens.

  3. 03

The feature your members ask for isn't on the roadmap.

Guest passes, partner perks, a members' leaderboard, a better way to find a game. The vendor builds for thousands of clubs at once, so the features that matter to yours may never arrive.

  4. 04

Your membership doesn't fit the template.

Tiers with different perks, family and corporate plans, guest allowances, access to partner venues. When running it takes workarounds and spreadsheets, the template is shaping your business instead of the other way around.

  5. 05

Every location feels like a different business.

As you open new locations or cities, members see different schedules, rules and screens. A premium brand needs to feel the same wherever members walk in.

  6. 06

    You sell more than bookings.

Events, coaching, retail, content or a café. When each lives in its own system, members juggle accounts and you lose the full picture of who your best members are.

  7. 07

You don't fully own the relationship.

The app may be published under the vendor's account, member data can be hard to take with you, and notifications follow their rules. If you switched platforms tomorrow, your members would have to start over.

Stay or switch

When a white-label app is still enough.

White-label apps from platforms like Mindbody, Glofox, CourtReserve and PlayByPoint are good products, and for many clubs they're the right choice. Switching only makes sense when the template has started to hold the business back.

Stay on white-label if

  • You run one location with standard class or court booking.
  • Members mostly book and leave, and that's fine for your business.
  • Your budget is a monthly subscription, not a project.
  • You're still proving the model and the membership is changing fast.

Your own app makes sense if

  • Your members expect an experience that matches your brand and your prices.
  • You run several locations, or plan to.
  • Your membership has tiers, perks, guests or partners a template can't express.
  • You sell events, coaching, content or retail alongside bookings.
  • You want the app, the data and the member relationship to be yours.

Keep what works

A new app doesn't mean a new booking system.

Replacing the app doesn't mean replacing everything behind it. Where your platform offers an API, your own app can sit on top of the booking system you already run. Your staff keep their tools, and members get a front door that looks and works like your brand.

On top of bookings, the app can bring together what now lives in WhatsApp groups, Instagram and email, like events, perks, member content and announcements, under your own name in the App Store and Google Play.
